Potato gratin

This delicious cheesy potato gratin is simple to make and goes really well as a side dish alongside gammon, steak, sausages or chops.

Ingredients:

  • 450g / 1lb potatoes, sliced
  • Pinch of salt
  • 150ml / ¼ pint double cream
  • 90ml / 3fl oz semi-skimmed milk
  • 100g / 4oz cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper

Top Tip: For extra added flavour try adding diced ham or sauteed onions when transferring to the dish.

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200ºc / Gas 6.  Peel the potatoes, then using a food processor or a mandolin, slice the potatoes so they are even.  Bring a pan of lightly salted water to the boil and cook the potato slices for 8-10mins, or until tender.  Drain and set aside.
  2. Meanwhile, in a bowl, mix together the double cream and milk.
  3. Grate the cheese and set aside.
  4. In a shallow baking dish, place a layer of potatoes, then sprinkle some cheese, salt and pepper and then repeat until all the potatoes and cheese have been used and ending with cheese on top.
  5. Carefully pour the milk mixture over the top.  Bake in the oven for aroud 20mins or until golden brown on top.  Serve hot.
